Shivani Pinapotu is a spatial thinker and designer interested in how space intersects with story, society and our sense of self.

Her earliest memory of a space was a pillowfort that her aunt had built when she was young. The experience of having a space that fit her and a place to call her own fascinated her beyond measure. She has since then been driven by the impact of empathy, wonder and a story well-told, and always finds herself reaching for these virtues to position herself within a project. Her practice is, therefore, an attempt to humanise the built environment.

She holds an MDes. in Interior Studies from the Rhode Island School of Design, where she concentrated in Exhibition and Narrative Environments, and has extensive experience in architecture, interiors, exhibitions and theatre design across India and the States.

She is presently working at Home Studios, Brooklyn.

Streets 4 People Challenge, Bengaluru Chapter

10th Main Road in Bangalore has long boasted of a bustling street life, owing to its vibrant commercial landscape spread across the distinguishable Jayanagar Shopping Complex. The existing patterns of usage makes for a very vibrant and complex co-dependent ecosystem of vendors, buyers, residents and visitors. However, the culmination of rampant urbanisation, traffic, commercial exploitation and vandalisation of commercial property has drained a few shades of its rich color. After thorough site and contextual studies, the urban strategies thus proposed also envisages a framework for the city to ensure acessibility, safety, walkability, socio-cultural flexibility and livability.

Drawing from local existing patterns, characters and historical influences and understanding the needs of the ‘smart’ citizen, we aim to weave through the existing fabric of the market-street to identify and resolve existing areas of conflict with our intervention, while also equipping the market with technologies that align with the interests of the users and stakeholders. The design focuses on situating the common man as the primary user of the space, therefore stitching together a network of built surfaces and activities that compliments their behavior and facilitates their needs.
